Battlelines - Winter Storm
The relief of Stalingrad by 4th Panzer Army was under the command of Field Marshall von Manstein. The plan was simple and desperate. The 4th Panzer Army would attack along the Rostov to Stalingrad railroad and relieve the besieged 6th Army. The supply situation was so difficult that the German panzers carried fuel and ammunition on the decks of the tanks. The 1st Guards Mechanized Corps was built from the remnants of the 1st Guards Rifle Division. Assigned to the 3rd Guards Army, Southwestern Front, in November 1942, the corps was first committed to action during Operation Saturn. Teamed with two tank corps, the 1st helped maul the Rumanian 3rd Army, destroy the Italian 8th Army and then drive for the Stalingrad airfields. During the attempted German relief of Stalingrad, operation "Winter Storm " left the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps in sore need of a refit.
Battlelines®: Winter Storm is the fourth game in the Stalingrad campaign. The 11th Panzer Division is pitted against the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps. Both unit decks are greatly benefitted by theforces comprising the Operation Deck’s reinforcements and the Upper Echelon forces. This operation is a bloody and dangerous fight by doctrinally complex, courageous opponents in a snow bound landscape.
